Trip Review Puerto Rico Sailing

“Sail Caribe is sort of a pioneer organization in the SVI charter business. They have Jeanneau monohulls and Lagoon catamarans for charter. Since there was just the two of us, we selected a monohull. There are not many boats available for charter in the SVI, and there are not many places to reprovision. That disadvantage is offset by the fact that there are not the crowds that you find in the BVI/USVI. We found many idyllic, nearly deserted anchorages and snorkel spots.”R. Becker, SailCaribe charter, March 2015

Culebrita - SailCaribe - Puerto Rico Vacation

“Culebrita was a short sail through the channel with reefs all along our starboard side over to the anchorage on the west side of the island. Again we were 1 of just 2 boats in the anchorage and it left under sail shortly thereafter. After some more amazing snorkeling we worked our way toward the beach and decided to explore the island and see if we could find the lighthouse and the billy goats…” Mahendra Charter, February 2015

“The Last Spanish Virgin”

Culebra’s series of bays, peninsulas, and bars create a long and intricate shoreline, some of which end in abrupt cliffs, sandy shores, or mangrove forests. The principal harbor, Ensenada Honda, is considered to be one of the most secure hurricane harbors in the Caribbean. The topography of Culebra is irregular with low elevation hills. Mount Resaca is the tallest hill on the island at 650 ft.

Spanish Virgin Island – Location

The island of Culebra lies approximately 17 miles east of Puerto Rico, 12 miles west of St. Thomas and 9 miles north of Vieques. Its total area, including surrounding Cays, is 7,000 acres

With days ranging between 80 – 95 and nights from 75-85 temperature in Culebra is generally Perfect. Although Culebra is a fairly arid island, it does rain. However, no need to bring serious rain gear as you will get too hot wearing it. Just be prepared to get wet or hang back and read for 10 minutes until it stops.

The island is a true paradise, at least for those seeking solitude, world-class food and accommodations, and sugary-white-sand beaches that make Maui’s look like overbooked gravel quarries.

Vieques lies about 8 miles (13 km) to the east of the Puerto Rican mainland, and measures approximately 21 miles (34 km) long by 4 miles (6 km) wide. The two main towns of Vieques are Isabel Segunda (sometimes written “Isabel II”), the administrative center located on the northern side of the island, and Esperanza, located on the southern side. At peak, the population of Vieques is around 10,000.

The island’s name is a Spanish spelling of a Native American word said to mean “small island”. It also has the nickname “Isla Nena”, usually translated from the Spanish as “Little Girl Island”, as a reference to its being perceived as Puerto Rico’s little sister island.
