The Moorings British Virgin Islands base is on the island of Tortola, a short trip from Puerto Rico or St. Thomas. Consider dinner and a night of air-conditioned comfort before setting sail for your Caribbean adventure.

Typical 7-Day Itinerary TORTOLA 

Charter Start • Orientation, chart briefing and check-out of your yacht. Depart by noon for a broad reach to The Bight, Norman Island.

Day 1 • Snorkel the caves of Norman Island, lunch at Peter Island, sail to Trellis Bay. 

Day 2 • A quick journey to Marina Cay or quiet Lee Bay on Great Camanoe.

Day 3 • Sail to Virgin Gorda, pick up a mooring, prowl the famous Baths. Dive in, dry off, then lunch in the cockpit and a sail up to Gorda Sound.

Day 4 • Explore the Sound, snorkel the reefs. Dinghy to Eustatia Island. And if it’s Thursday, meet other Moorings sailors at the Bitter End.

Day 5 • Sail to Cane Garden Bay, walk to the rum distillery. Anchor for the night at Jost Van Dyke.

Day 6 • The Sir Francis Drake Channel is passage to Little Harbour, Peter Island or Cooper Island. Lunch at Salt Island, then dive or snorkel the wreck of The Rhone.

Day 7 • Back to Road Town under sail, check the boat in before noon.

Clarence Malone, Base Manager in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, is dedicated to providing you with an outstanding vacation experience.

Your comfort is assured by extensive facilities including a restaurant, hotel, gift shop, dive shop, shower/toilets, provisioning store, laundry, car rental, post office and bank.

Transfers: The transfers from Beef Island airport to the base and back are included in the price of the yacht. A safari bus/van awaits you once you have cleared customs. The Moorings also organizes - free of charge - transfers to and from West End or Road Town ferry docks. Only one transfer per charter is included in the price of the yacht; if your party needs several transfers, please inform your Moorings agent.

Embarkation/disembarkation time: Your charter starts and ends at noon.

One-way charters are available from Tortola, allowing you to drop off your Moorings yacht to any of our 5 other locations in the Caribbean: St Martin, Martinique, St Lucia, Union Island and Grenada. Our teams in these locations will also be happy to welcome you if you wish to simply overnight or re-provision; fuel, water and ice are free of charge for Moorings customers.

Taxis from Airport: Fares are fixed. To Road Town $5-$15. To West End $30.

Weather: Tropical and tempered by trade winds. Little variation between summer and winter. Rainfall is low, varying slightly from island to island. Night-time temperatures drop to a comfortable level.

The wind direction throughout the Virgins is dominated by the movements of the Bermuda High. During the winter months of November to January, the prevailing wind is from the Northeast at 15-20 knots. By June, they are out of the Southeast at 10-15 knots. From September to October, the Trade Winds are weakest, and the weather can be less settled.
